First lady Michelle Obama and her pricey vacation in Spain

First lady Michelle Obama is being targeted for taking a private, expensive trip to Spain with daughter Sasha and a number of friends of the Obama family, according to Fox News. Naturally, anything the first family does, whether private or not, is always a public affair, as the media is already towering over Mrs. Obama’s each movement. Now everybody wants to know each little detail the first lady’s private escape entails.

Travel warning issued where first lady vacations, in Spain

While the president celebrated his 49th birthday with mega-star talk show host Oprah Winfrey in Chicago, first lady Michelle Obama, along with daughter Sasha, 9, and a couple of friends of the family, took a four-day “private trip” to Spain’s exotic southern coast. While some are avoiding talking about the trip’s price, others are voicing concerns of safety.

According to Fox News, the State Department had issued a travel warning for Americans traveling to Spain, saying that “racist prejudices may lead to the arrest of Afro-Americans who travel to Spain,” a message that was posted on its site. The wording, nevertheless, can no longer be found, as it appears it was quickly pulled when the first lady and daughter Sasha left on their trip. When asked if there was a travel warning for Spain, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said, “I do not believe so.”

Who will pay for the first lady’s costly escape trip to Spain?

The biggest worry concerning the first lady’s trip trip to Spain is the overall cost of the trip and the affect it has on taxpayer money. New York Daily News writer Andrea Tantaros trash-talked Michelle Obama on Thursday, calling her a “modern day Marie Antoinette” for going on such an costly trip while the majority of the Americas is financially underwater. The first lady and companions are staying at Hotel Villa Padierna, often described as one of the world’s top 10 luxurious hotels, with rates that range from $ 500 to almost $ 3,000 for a single night, as outlined by Yahoo News.

Regardless of who chose the location, whether it was the Obama delegation or Secret Service, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs has confirmed the first lady will look after her own personal expenses, as will the private party traveling with her. The overall cost of the trip, nevertheless, will not be fully covered with personal out-of-the-pocket cash, given that the first lady has full-time Secret Service protection and has to travel on board an official Air Force charter plane, which is covered by taxpayers.
